Athelstan asks Ragnar what he's preparing for. Athelstan says that he's watched him and that he's about to do something. Ragnar says that he isn't strong enough and Athelstan asks what the gods say. This upsets Ragnar who tells Athelstan to finish cleaning the fish in silence. Earl Haraldson gathers his men. Ragnar goes hunting. While he's away his village gets attacked by Earl Haraldson. Lagertha gives Athelstan a weapon and tells them to stay strong while they wait for Ragnar to return.

Ragnar makes it to his house but he gets shot in the process. He makes his family go beneath the house so that they can get to the boat. Ragnar surrenders, giving his family time to escape. Ragnar manages to escape but they give chase. He leads them to a cliff where he jumps off. He lands in the water but Athelstan has to jump in and grab him. Earl Haraldson asks if he's dead and they tell him that they don't know.

The Earl tells them to seize his boat and if they find his family to bring them to him. Ragnar and his family sail to Floki 's home. There they seek his help because Ragnar is dying. Earl Haraldson sets his daughter up with Earl Bjarni and this upsets Siggy.

Lagertha, her children, and Athelstan all say prayers to their gods to help heal Ragnar. Earl Haraldson tells Siggy that this marriage will bring them land and important alliances.

Haraldson tells Siggy about the shallow grave that the killers dug for his sons. How they cut their heads off and put their faces against their asses as a sign of disrespect. He hands her locks of hair from their heads that he took. Ragnar gets a visit from Torstein who tells them that they are also being watched. Later, at night, Torstein asks him what Ragnar is going to do. Throughout its six season run, Vikings generally plays on the narrative edges when it comes to the supernatural, and while the gods remain an integral part of Nowegian daily life, most mysterious occurrences eventually come with a reasonable explanation.

Such is not the case with the circumstances surrounding the return of actress Alicia Agneson. After his defeat at Kattegat, he strangles Freydis to death on the floor of the great hall where her dead body is eventually discovered by Ubbe and the others.

Still, she neither confirms nor denies his recollections leaving Ivar and the audience to wonder whether Freydis has magically risen from the dead to haunt her killer and former husband, or if Katia merely bears a remarkable resemblance to the woman who sat briefly on the throne next to Ivar.

Never one to underestimate his adversary, Ivar continues to carefully cultivate his relationship with young Prince Igor who now sees the northman as his royal equal. However, the more the young prince understands about his place in the line of succession, the more volatile the situation becomes, and Ivar may simply be biding his time to step in and pick up the pieces. Hvitserk is severely tested. Floki makes an amazing discovery. Freydis gives Ivar a surprise. Ubbe negotiates with the three Danish Kings that have massed their armies in Reading, but the negotiations may have a perilous outcome. Ubbe is forced into hand-to-hand combat. Floki reaches new depths and is met by a shocking sight.

Bjorn sets off for Scandinavia with an old rival. A new battle for Kattegat is on and only the gods know who will emerge victorious.
