Chrono cross who is janus

Before he casts his ultimate attack, he will cast a spell that does nothing to the party but signal that he is about to unleash the spell soon. On the next turn, he will cast his ultimate spell: Dark Matter , which will inflict a lot of damage, enough to wipe out a character if not in full health. The team has just a few rounds more to recover and do damage before he does it again.

He, at first, mocks Crono for wanting to assault Lavos and the Ocean Palace. He will offer Frog - or the entire team if he is not present - an opportunity for revenge but if you choose not to fight him he joins the party. If Frog or the team takes him up on the offer, the second boss fight with Magus takes place.

His defense is no longer boosted and he no longer has the Barrier shift. Even so, his magic attacks can still do a good amount of damage and hits all if unprepared.

If Frog is one of the three front-line characters and you choose to fight Magus, Frog will fight Magus alone. This match is much easier than having a party of three without Frog because players don't have to worry about massive healing as Magus' spells hit all every time. He can be recruited anytime after defeating the Blackbird. He is found in North Cape meeting him is still an essential part of the story. After a short argument in which Magus mocks Crono for trying to fight Lavos , Magus will ask Frog if he wishes to fight, or the whole party if they want to fight him if Frog isn't a member.

If Frog refuses if he does, his reason is that he knows killing Magus won't bring Crono and Cyrus back , Magus will join the party as they start to leave, not actually giving them a choice of letting him or not. Regardless of choice, he tells the heroes that there may be a way to revive Chrono with the aid of the Guru of time. Canonically, Magus was spared and recruited, as he is mentioned in Lucca 's letter to Kid in Chrono Cross.

This is supported by an extra shadow in Luccia 's room while the letter is being read, although this may be a glitch of some kind. Although, Magus is an optional character, he is nonetheless an iconic cast member of Chrono Trigger with many fans, and he has appeared in three GameFAQs character battles. The two then battle, the fight happening off-screen.

After that, a figure with a cape is seen standing on top of Magus' castle, but it isn't known if it's him or Frog. He is depicted as masked and mysterious, though gentle and cultured. However, as development of the game progressed, designers decided it would be too difficult to integrate his complex story into the plot.

Missing Piece includes a number of discarded character designs for Guile, including one which is more-or-less analogous to Magus' appearance in Chrono Trigger cloak, pointed ears, etc. As it stands, Magus is only mentioned in a letter to Kid from Lucca, in which she assures Kid not to worry as "Janus" is probably watching over her. In the English version of this easter egg, Gil is referred to as "Magil".

When Magus joins the party, his HP takes a massive drop from his former boss forms, but his damage-dealing ability increases. He fights using a scythe as a weapon. His overall function is as a Black Mage type character dealing damage with magic , but his physical stats are still higher then those of magically strong characters, such as Marle and Lucca. He is the only character in Chrono Trigger besides Robo that uses techs of different elements and has at least one tech of each element , making him more versatile.

His own unique Shadow damage techs are among the most powerful in the early game. Dark Bomb is the only level one spell that can hit multiple enemies and is stronger than any level two spell. His Dark Mist does the same strength as Dark Bomb but hits everyone on screen. However, his Dark Matter, while very powerful, is not as strong as the other final lvl3 offensive spells in the game like Luminaire and Flare.

Black Hole can be useful against some of the nastiest regular enemies in the game, especially the Iron Maidens in the Dimensional Vortex in the DS version. Magus, storyline-wise, works well independently and his movesets reflect this. The only moveset he has that helps his party is Magic Barrier , which is best used on someone like Robo or Ayla. He is the only character that does not have a Dual tech one of his main drawbacks.

He is also the only character that cannot learn a Triple Tech naturally, mainly with Crono ; his triple techs, Omega Flare and Dark Eternal , require the use of special stones, such as Black Gemstone. I've never even seen what he really looks like. At times, it seems as though I'm hanging around someone from another world -- traveling with this pack is definitely an interesting experience.

Kid's quiet about her past too, but it's like I know her entire life story compared to how little I know about Magil. How does any of this make coherent sense? How is this not a major failing on the overarching plot of Chrono Cross or just plain poor quality writing from Masato Kato?

It would have been simpler to write that Lucca left to defend her country and never returned. What about her parents and her friends? Was this a severe plot hole and a cornucopia of failed concepts to deliberately shovel contempt at Chrono Trigger? What could help explain these confusing contradictions in character motives and actions?

Lucca never once even mentions the Fall of Guardia when mentioning her friends and her fears in her letter. A horrible answer came to me for the duration that I played Chrono Cross the first time.

However, I was ill-equipped to explain my reasoning to the broader Chrono Cross community, despite the fact that many who just finish Chrono Cross and get the true ending also claim that the game strongly implies that Serge is Janus.

Older fans repeatedly try to dismiss this as a misinterpretation that makes no sense, yet this interpretation is the most prevalent among people who have the game fresh in their memory. I spoke louder, assured, and confident that the game was just a plothole ridden mess as the horrifying theory pronounced itself more and cleared away potential plot holes into intersecting plot points that made coherent sense in the most horrifying pathways imaginable.

I was horrified as it was happening and tried to tell myself that I was clearly looking too deeply in a plot in which the author encourages gamers to look deeply into everything. I tried to deny that I had uncovered a theory of something truly evil that fixed all the plot holes that I had adamantly described and which brought about one of the worst and possibly most contentious themes for a game of its time. Comparable to the first Drakengard game in terms of bringing heart-wrenching disgust and a chilling amount of sense as the puzzles began to shift and interlock together to create a tapestry of mayhem, malady, and blood-soaked purity.

Indeed, every question I just mentioned is explainable and the plot pieces were staring Chrono Cross fans in the face all along; the horrible, terrifying sense of it all was synonymously breathtaking and exhausting. Chrono Trigger DS, written and made by Masato Kato himself to clear away inconsistencies, is what made this theory possible.

With this information fully clarified by Kato himself and used to further connect plot threads to clear away plot contradictions, we may now rest assured that this theory is entirely viable and I obviously think that it is most likely what happened. My rational mind cleared away the contradictions and saw what was right in front of the fanbase that was too horrified to acknowledge and speak of the truth of what befell Guardia in AD.

Now, I shall stop doing my best impersonation of Lynx and get to the point of the matter. How does that even make sense? Worse than that, the Overlord explanation is the vaguest and most banal of explanations with no further reasoning or explanation given.

They simply allowed innocent children to be massacred, when they broke the boundaries of time to save all of humanity from Lavos? What on earth happened? What can explain this? The answer is exceedingly simple and utterly horrifying:. The Overlord that helped Dalton was part of the Chrono Trigger team and aided in defeating Lavos along with the rest of them. Magus helped Dalton to obliterate Guardia off the face of the world.

The more I thought over this possibility, the more sense it made, and the more the puzzle pieces fit neatly together. First, he was obviously just as powerful and perhaps more powerful than Crono himself thanks to his dark magic and likely helped in his fair share on defeating Lavos.

Second, unlike Dalton, he had significant experience and history with taking on Guardia in AD. Does it truly make sense that someone as incompetent as Dalton could wage a successful war within a year, while Magus had several years of a prolonged civil war with Guardia in AD?

Magus had optimal experience in facing Guardia throughout his time in AD. He successfully kidnapped the Queen, killed their finest knight Cyrus, and cursed Glenn into becoming a Frog.

He battered Guardia and at the very least had them at a stalemate until Crono arrived from the future. In fact, the only reason implied for why Magus was defeated was that it was self-caused by his hatred for Lavos and desire to summon Lavos to kill it. Many fans may sputter and come-up with arguments about Guile, but Guile is the Other Magus who has lost his memory and teleported himself into the universe we play and experience in Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. I must stress again that it was Masato Kato himself who wrote that in.

And think about this: from a lengthy look into the plot and characters of both games, the only one who fits the bill for being an evil emperor, or an Overlord, or a Time Lord is Magus. Sadly, murdering Marle and Crono would be the easiest part to do. Dalton was either an effective cover story for Magus, or Magus made sure that Dalton got all the credit so his actions were kept unknown to the broader international public as he simply wanted to do all he could to bring Schala back and save her, but more on that further on.

Perhaps to enrage them into a fit of anger and madness, which Magus quickly took advantage of to kill them both. Which again, Magus would take advantage of because he solely loves and cares about saving Schala, and killed Crono and Marle who suffered in anguish and the most miserable of emotional pains before being brutally murdered.

The Magus that Lucca refers to had to have been with her in the Chrono Trigger party, or she would never have been comfortable enough to speak his real name, Janus, so openly and happily. It could never have been the Other Magus that turned into Guile. She had no way of knowing what happened to that Other Magus after the battle with the Dream Devourer, she never worked with or spoke to that Other Magus; if her party had been the timeline in which Magus had been killed by Frog then it makes absolutely no sense for Lucca to write of Magus so fondly, to openly write of the intimate details of his life and true name, and to be so certain that Magus would protect Kid.

How could a dead man who was killed by Frog in Antiquity protect Kid? It goes back to the same problem: how could a dead man from Antiquity protect Kid? Keep in mind, Lucca is the most logical member of the party and tries to make as rational approach as possible. How is such a thing possible? Chrono Cross fans speculate that she was in contact with Balthasar with no real explanation on how or why. It makes no sense for Lucca to not fight them since the children would be in more danger under Porre than the more benevolent Guardia.

The explanation that nicely fits and clears away any plotholes in this letter is simply accepting that Janus was there in AD. Perhaps even telling her of his intent to protect Kid. The Overlord being Magus makes the most consistent sense and the horrific acts done to Marle and Crono were likely not mentioned either to spare Kid further grief or Magus lied to Lucca about what happened as she had stayed neutral to the conflict and he wished for her to remain so.

The obvious question now present is: why would Magus do this to his erstwhile allies? He never gave-up on her despite being stuck in a future timeline.

The only one that poor Magus grew-up feeling any sort of emotional connection with and kept him going was the idea of returning to save his sister. Sadly, this idea helped to form a idolized version of Schala in which Magus interpreted his sister as the only positive ray of hope throughout his life. This idolized version may have also kept him going during his puberty years as all that was around him were monsters who demanded survival of the fittest and grueling work.

Ergo, he fell in deep incestuous love with the fantasized version of his older sister and wanted his intense sexual frustration requited with his older sister. Now, before some of you stop reading and lambast me for this portion, keep in mind that Schala was the only good thing that kept Magus going for an alleged 20 — 30 years in AD.

Therefore, Magus having lust for his older sister might be normal and may have been encouraged for the norms and ethics of his time period of Antiquity. He would do everything to save Schala, no matter the cost. The two then battle each other, the fighting happens off-screen. After that, a figure with a cape is seen standing on top of Fiendlord's castle, but it isn't known if it's him or Frog.

I'm sure that all of you have discussed everything there is to know about any reference to Janus made in Chrono Cross, so I will focus on something that you might not have considered. At the ending of Chrono Trigger, Magus decides to search for Schala. We never find out if he succeeds or not in Chrono Cross, but there is an interesting parallel.

At the ending of Chrono Cross, Schala Kid , tells Serge that she will be searching for him, and she will travel through time and the dimensions until she finds him.

This seems to be reminiscent of Magus' search for Schala. It is possible that "who is searching for who" has been reversed. This would mean that Serge could actually somehow be Janus. I'll let you all elaborate on this, because I am pressed for time, but I do want to point something out.

Schala, as she was falling through the Gate that sent her to the Darkness Beyond Time, heard Serge crying from across time. She felt compelled to save him, so she created a clone of herself to watch over him.

My question is: Would she have done that for anybody? Could she have heard other people crying, and wanted to help them, too?
