They are both pushing the boundaries of their desire for knowledge and will stop at nothing to achieve their ambitions. He almost seems to worship Victor as he talks to him more and more on the ship. He cares only about feeding his quest for knowledge and satisfying his imagination. Why does Walton desire a friend? Walton longs for a friend to share his excitement over the voyage to the North Pole. He is separated from his sister, whom he may never see again, and he has no one to buoy his courage or steady his heady excitement. Who is Mrs Saville in Frankenstein? Saville is significant only because she is the recipient of the letters describing Frankenstein's story.

Walton is the most unreliable narrator in comparison to Victor and the monster, as he only tells the account of the tale from his perspective and therefore it only allows us to see the story from his viewpoint.
Even though we're really worried about him at the beginning—taking a bunch of Russian sailors off on a suicide mission to the North Pole—he ends up turning around and heading home, even though he comes back "ignorant and disappointed" But see, that's where he's wrong.
He may not have reached the North Pole, but he's learned something better: He's learned his limits. And notice that he's also the only one who ends up having an extended conversation with the monster? We could all learn something from Walton.
